Here are alternative options"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l7qaee009126qi3jzt0ag1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Sugary drinks may leave a sour taste given their possible impact on mortality, according to a new study. \u201cThis is a public health crisis, requiring urgent action,\u201d said the study\u2019s senior author, Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist and director of the Food is Medicine Institute at Tufts University.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw001m3b6ml57glorc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The study, published Monday in the journal Nature Medicine, analyzed global data on sugar-sweetened beverages consumed around the world, observational and randomized studies, and both diabetes and cardiovascular disease prevalence.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw001n3b6mvcy1rkby@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            With the evidence, researchers created a comparative risk model and estimated that sugary drinks \u201ccause more than 330,000 annual deaths from diabetes and cardiovascular disease,\u201d Mozaffarian said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw001o3b6mwyzkl6fj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The problem is particularly serious in Latin America and the Caribbean, which had the largest number of cardiovascular disease cases related to beverages,  and sub-Saharan Africa, which also had the most cases of type 2 diabetes from sugary drinks, he added, based on the researchers\u2019 model.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw001p3b6mdbgddhpq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The study also examined the demographics of those most affected by sweetened drinks \u2013\u2013 namely, younger male adults with higher education in urban areas, said Toby Smithson, a registered dietitian nutritionist, fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and senior manager of nutrition and wellness at the American Diabetes Association. She was not involved in the study.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw001q3b6m571f3q43@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s time to pay attention to, and take priority actions to deal with, this tragic preventable suffering,\u201d Mozaffarian said in an email.    <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm5l86obw001r3b6mceidqrc4@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"why-liquid-sugar-is-so-fast-acting\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Why liquid sugar is so fast-acting<\/h3>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw001s3b6mb3s23y6f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Because the study did not test a behavior or intervention against a control group, the new study\u2019s researchers can\u2019t say that the sugar sweetened beverages are causing diabetes and cardiovascular disease \u2013\u2013 they can only estimate the impact.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/related-content\/instances\/cm5l7uzay00193b6mixom4grk@published\" data-component-name=\"related-content\" class=\"related-content_full-width related-content_full-width--article\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n<div class=\"related-content_full-width__image image__related-content\">            <\/div>\n<p class=\"related-content_full-width__headline\">            <span class=\"related-content_full-width__title-text\" data-editable=\"content.title\">Related article<\/span>      <span class=\"related-content_full-width__headline-text\" data-editable=\"content.headline\">Some added sugar sources are worse than others for disease risk, study suggests<\/span>    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw001t3b6m2vhx4dkx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The researchers collected valuable data across 184 countries, but the study did not factor in all income levels and the increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease among high-risk ethnic groups, Smithson said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw001v3b6m5r2g4maf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But the finding of sugary beverages as harmful makes sense, as many studies have shown a link between such drinks and poor health impacts, Mozaffarian said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw001w3b6ml5sh1xna@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Sugar sweetened beverages have \u201cempty calories\u201d \u2014 or calories without any nutritional benefits, Smithson said.  They are also a source of fast-acting carbohydrates, which enter the bloodstream and raise blood sugar quickly, she added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw001y3b6ms776a8tz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cLiquid sugars are absorbed more rapidly in the digestive system since they do not require the same breakdown processes as solid foods,\u201d Janzi said in an email. \u201cSolid sugars are often part of foods that contain other nutrients like fiber, proteins, and fats.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw001z3b6mb37x0f4b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Those nutrients slow digestion, meaning there is a more gradual release of sugar into the bloodstream, she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw00203b6me5oz4282@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While fats, fiber and proteins in solid food leave you feeling fuller longer, liquid sugars often don\u2019t fill you up, which can lead to appetite dysregulation and the consumption of too many calories, she added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw00213b6mh8s4328c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cDifferent sources of added sugars also vary in their consumption patterns, which could further explain why they associate differently with cardiovascular disease risk,\u201d Janzi said.    <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm5l86obw00223b6mafl4wcfj@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"are-alternative-sweeteners-the-answer\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Are alternative sweeteners the answer?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw00233b6mgsitxbhm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            What about drinks that are sweetened with something other than sugar? They might be better, but they aren\u2019t the answer, Mozaffarian said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw00243b6mys2rljcc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cGrowing research shows that both natural and artificial low-calorie sweeteners are not innocuous and may cause health harms, so these should be considered a short-term, less harmful alternative, not a long-term solution,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw00253b6mvsnd32qq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For example, artificial sweeteners might be a good substitute in moderation for people with diabetes, who may be accustomed to sugary drinks, Smithson said.    <\/p>\n<div instead of relying on artificial sweeteners, Mozaffarian advises switching to unsweetened drinks all together, such as seltzer, unsweetened tea or coffee, or just plain water.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw00293b6m8ssgxk6t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Hydration is important for managing blood pressure, blood sugar, internal temperature and digestion, Smithson said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5l86obw002a3b6m2tslpfn3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe best hydrating beverage is water,\u201d she said in an email. \u201cIf a person doesn\u2019t like plain water, they
